Stories Behind the Blend: Orchard Peach

Orchard Peach has always been a favorite blend around here and competes with Front Porch Special for the top spot most of the year. It's a fruit and herbal infusion that we are proud of, probably in part because of how much time it took to come up with.

Peach is a very popular flavor in tea blends, and with so many options. The problem is the peach flavoring other tea companies use. It has a fake, peach soda or candy-type flavor that is nostalgic but in all the wrong ways. 

We wanted our peach tea to be a big celebration of an orchard full of peaches.

It's a tough flavor to capture, and while freshly dried peaches (processed at the peak of ripeness) are a very good start, they needed a few other things to really get it closer to the flavor and sensation of biting in to a real peach.

So here's what we did...

We took rosehips, hibiscus, peaches, and apples as our starting point. That provides a bunch of the natural tartness and sweetness to the blend, plus gives it a nice color.

After fiddling around, we found that pineapples and papayas provided some complementary flavor notes to the peach, giving a lot of the classic "fruitiness" we were looking for.

There are a few other ingredients we used to soften it and round it out, but for some reason, we were still missing a bit of the experience.

Rose petals turned out to be the missing ingredient and completed the blend. They keep the infusion from being too sharp and give that floral aroma and flavor that accompanies fresh peaches.
